AN OREGON READING ASSOCIATION RESOLUTION: |
|
|
Freedom
to Teach... Freedom to Learn Whereas:
the evaluation and selection of curriculum materials
for reading and language arts in Oregon involves a rigorous and careful
examination at the state and district level; and Whereas:
this substantive and open review is conducted by trained, knowledgeable
educators committed to a final selection that will connect students to
a diversity of ideas and experiences, and Whereas:
our schools must continue to provide a broad spectrum of literature
that reflects our pluralistic society, and; Whereas:
the development of values depends not only on the sensitivity with
home, community and religous institutions; and Whereas:
freedom of choice must continue to be an unfettered prerogative in
schools in a democratic society; Be it
therefore resolved that: the Oregon Reading Association respects and
supports the judgement and right of local school districts to select those
materials that best serve the needs of their students. Be it therefore resolved that: the Oregon Reading Association urges districts to stand firm on such decisions. |
